Prior to UNIFI installation posted earlier, I collected some data to be used as benchmark agains UNIFI, which includes speedstest result, and also pingtest result.

Let’s start with TM speedtest website(http://speedtest.tm.net.my).

Speedtest Result (Speedtest hosted by TM)

Streamyx

Unifi

Previous account (streamyx) was capped at 1.5Mbps to counter the overhead loss. Such configuration enabled me get the subsribed access speed, as advertised. As for Unifi, TM didn’t expect much of signal loss since it’s now on fibre, hence the speed is capped as per advertised. I’ve no complaint on this, and happily accept it πŸ™‚

This test is really important and should be done the moment they finished installing Unifi at your place. If you fail to secure good local access speed, one can start guessing what will be the international access speed would be. So always, do this as part of troubleshooting your internet problem. If you do not get the good speed, the start making some noise to TM. πŸ™‚

Now, let’s check how Unifi performs outside Malaysia.. i mean, international traffic πŸ™‚

We’ll start with our closest neighbour, Singapore.

Streamyx

Unifi

It seems that Unifi still manage to maintain its access speed as per advertised to outside Malaysia; Singapore. Streamyx did some fair amount of job, considering it reached its possible maximum access speed. Now, let’s move a bit further to the east; Japan πŸ™‚

Streamyx

Unifi

Suprisingly, Streamyx was still having a good connection to Japan, maxing out the access speed as advertised. As for Unifi, the download speed delivered as what promised by TM, however the upload speed seemed to suffer some minor setback. Let’s raise the challenge a bit by moving to the west; UK i.e. Manchester.

Streamyx

Unifi

Speedtest to UK/US is really important as these are where most of the website contents are hosted. Having poor access speed to UK/US means that you are in deep trouble. Haha! Therefore, it is always good to know your potential limit/constraint so that you can carry out some optimization on Β your side to rebound and to get the maximum access speed during download πŸ™‚

Based on the tests conducted above, Streamyx was looking quite good, however, Unifi did perform very well, attaining access speed close to advertised. Difference in access speed (1.18 Mbps vs 4.67 Mbps) is therefore the important decisive factor for Unifi to stand out in this test. Now, let’s move further west (US) before we can conclude the testing. πŸ™‚

Streamyx

Unifi

Suprisingly, although the tested server was located about 8500 miles away, Unifi seemed to deliver consistent speed, as advertised. Such achievement must follow with great compliment. So double thumbs up to TM! Good job TM!

Fibre is the way forward for the digital communication πŸ™‚

As additional analysis, I also did some Pingtest to local server, Singapore, US and also UK server. Typically, local connection to MY should be very LOW (less than 30), otherwise you will face connection drop issues and this is not good for gaming purposes. You may miss headshot dude!

EDITED: One final test, upload test! Just uploaded HD movie to Facebook. I was quite impressed with the speed. (417 KBps, or roughly about 4Mbps upload speed)

  1. Bila Unifi nak sampai Ipoh? lol
Ping takde effect sangat connect to US server dalam steamix vs unified. Still dalam 300-400 msec kan?
Cisss.. kalau la ping dapat reduce to 50-100 msec bila connect to US server kan best… πŸ™
Ada cara tak gemal nak reduce ping nie?

  2. Aku rasa cam around 2012 kot baru sampai Ipoh, hari tue terbaca kat dalam forum.. kena tunggu ah, mana ler tau sampai awal πŸ™‚

Itulah, ping still tinggi jugak.. MY ke US dah pakai fibre optic dah pun.. maybe sbb ada bottleneck lain jgak rasanyer.. nnt aku try check further kat mana bottlneck nyer.. πŸ™‚

Oh, baguslah dah nak ada coverage UNIFI kat Ipoh. I heard initially UNIFI will not be nationwide available because of the deployment cost tue.. agak mahal.. huhu

  5. rubbush 1mb compare with 5mb sure slow lah. closed this forum pls.

rubbush 1mb compare with 5mb sure slow lah. closed this forum pls.

The intent was actually to compare on the deliverability of the speed promised, and also to compare in terms of latency πŸ™‚

Another reason is to act as a proof to those who are still contemplating on whether to upgrade to UNIFI.

  7. Eventually it will end up like streamyx (overloaded). Overpriced and monopolized broadband services is what we have in malaysia. Heck! Everything is controlled by power/money/both.

do u all encounter problem which for those who are subscribing streamyx, upgrade to unify, after install unify, u hv to purposely go to tm point , ( celaka, damn long queue n traffic jam there) to ask them to stop your streamyx , n wait them to visit ur hse again to ollect back the streamyx equipments! if u r not free to do so, until mayb after one mth or more, the streamyx bill will stil continue charging, by the time u hv to pay both streamyx n unify! what a stupid company, whole market monopoly by them, yet unify n streamyx is under same company, why want trouble consumer to purposely go visit them? they think we are so free? ok, i can try to visit them but really can do it after nxt mth as that mth is really hectic we cant apply leave, sunday, they r not open! they must consider our situation, we can tolerate to go there, but they cant charge us for the streamyx bill, since we ady upgrade to unify! upgrade upgrade, TM , the whole company’s coordination is so lame! u cant even stop them by calling to the customer service! now onli i know few of my frens kena, but we stil hv to use their service , the whole market let TM play, consumers also let him pusing around!

Nope. Didnt face the problem u mentioned. I think they have improved a lot in offering the Unifi services. I havent felt regret subscribing to the package. In fact, I wish they could come out earlier. πŸ˜€

My current comment for improvement is to allow for higher speed for local access. By doing this, it will encourage local content and also at the same time save the internation bandwidth πŸ˜€
